Chapter 1

Sia Sharma walks home from college, reflecting on her life and introducing herself. She speaks of her toxic, abusive father, Rahul Sharma, who has always been emotionally absent, both to her and her mother, Vani. Sia resents how her mother has endured this, believing Vani deserves so much more than the life she has.

At home, Vani warmly invites Sia to share some fruits with her. As they sit together, Vani reminisces about her past, revealing that she married Rahul in 1999 at the age of 19. She shares her dream of becoming an HR professional, a dream crushed when Rahul refused to let her work after their marriage.

Vani fondly recalls her best friend, Sangeeta Agarwal, who passed away in 1998 due to a high fever. Sia notices how much joy Sangeeta brought into her mother's life and how different things might have been if her mother had been supported.

Listening to her mother's story, Sia feels a surge of anger and sorrow. Her mother's sacrifices and unfulfilled dreams weigh heavily on her, leaving Sia with one thought: her mom deserves better than Rahul.

After finishing her conversation with her mother, Sia heads to her room to change. As she adjusts her clothes, the sound of raised voices from downstairs reaches her ears. Her heart tightens—she knows this pattern all too well. The shouting grows louder, followed by the sound of something crashing to the ground.

Rushing downstairs in panic, Sia freezes at the sight before her. Her mother, Vani, is slumped on the floor, unconscious, with blood streaming from a gash on her forehead. Next to her, Rahul, Sia's father, sits on the floor, clutching a broken flowerpot in his hand. His face is a mask of anger, but there is no remorse in his eyes.

Sia's breath catches in her throat as she rushes to her mother's side, her hands trembling. Her mother is fainted, vulnerable, and battered. Sia's fury and heartbreak surge through her like an unstoppable wave. The weight of the moment crashes over her, and she's left standing there, torn between anger at her father and desperation to save her mother

Sia doesn't hesitate for a second. In the chaos of her emotions, she scoops her mother up, her heart pounding in her chest as she rushes out the door. With her mother's head resting in her lap, she runs to the car, her hands shaking as she clutches the steering wheel. The weight of what just happened feels unbearable, but there's no time to dwell on it.

By the time they reach the hospital, it's already 10 PM. The lights of the emergency entrance blur in Sia's vision as she carries her mother inside, her heart breaking with every step. Her tears mix with the frantic pace of her breathing. Her college bag, still clutched tightly in her hand, is a silent witness to the chaos, the one thing that kept her grounded as she rushed through the night.

As the nurses take her mother into the ER, Sia collapses into a chair in the waiting room, her sobs uncontrollable. She can't stop crying, the weight of the situation sinking in. Her mother, unconscious and bleeding, was the last thing she ever wanted to see. And yet, she couldn't stop the torrent of emotions from flooding out.

The doctor comes out after what feels like an eternity, his face grim. He explains that her mother, Vani, needs an immediate operation to stop the bleeding and treat the damage. Sia's heart races—she's already lost so much, and now her mother's life is hanging in the balance.

Without thinking, Sia hands over all of her savings to cover the cost of the surgery. Every penny she had earned is now in the hands of the hospital, her only priority being her mother's well-being. The weight of the decision settles on her shoulders, but she doesn't hesitate. Her mother's life is all that matters right now.

As the operation begins, Sia sits alone in the waiting room. The fear, the anger, and the helplessness flood her, overwhelming her emotions. In moments like these, when everything feels too heavy, Sia has always turned to writing. It's a habit she formed years ago—writing letters to God. Whenever life becomes unbearable, she writes down her frustrations, her questions, and her pain, believing that God is the only one who might understand.

Sia pulls out a notebook from her college bag, her tears staining the pages as she begins to write:

"Dear God, why does she have to suffer? Why does she deserve this? She's always been so kind, so loving, and yet she's stuck in a life of pain and regret. Why can't she have the happiness she deserves?"

With each word, Sia pours her heart out, her grief spilling onto the paper. Her mother, the woman who had sacrificed so much, was lying in an operating room, and Sia couldn't stop the torrent of emotions. She couldn't bear to see her mother like this, hurt and vulnerable.

As she finishes the letter, Sia closes her eyes and prays silently, hoping that somehow, something will change. That her mother's life will be spared, and that she'll be able to give her the love and happiness she never had.
